Deep Night Season 14: Maud Newton

Dale contemplates the present moment by looking into the past with guest Maud Newton, author of Ancestor Trouble: A Reckoning and a Reconciliation. Maud writes with clarity and purpose about her complicated family tree and the uncomfortable truths that reside in its deep Southern roots. Maud speaks candidly with Dale about the people and stories in her life that led her to begin researching her ancestry and the often startling patterns of behavior, character, and harm that emerged. Dale and Maud consider the genetic draw of certain places, the forces that guide us, and the ways one’s response to a difficult situation can alter what gets passed on to future generations. The two also speak about the heaviness of discovering one’s parent has contemplated suicide, and what it’s like to have to carry that information forward. They also discuss the importance of having your spirits on call and the need to honor the moment. Plus Dale reads a letter.
